This penguin craft is great for kids and makes a cute winter home decor item.
I love penguins. I think they are so stinking cute! They are one of my favorite exhibits to see at the Detroit Zoo and I could spend all day in there watching them. My kids also like penguins. We have a giant stuffed penguin my daughter received when she turned 3 and she named him, Bob. My 3 year old recently finished learning about arctic animals in preschool and told me, "penguins don't fly, they swim."
Once I made my snowman craft, I knew I had to make an adorable penguin with my doll pins! I love these skinny tall creatures and you will, too! If you'd like add a string to hang them on your Christmas tree. Or, you can display in your home them in January like I do!
How to Make a Penguin Craft
You'll need a few materials before you begin:
- wood doll pins
- white acrylic paint
- black acrylic paint
- scrap fleece or fabric
- black and orange permanent markers
- paint brush
- Paint the front of your doll pin with white acrylic paint. Let dry completely.
- Paint the sides and back of your doll pin with black acrylic paint, as shown, creating the penguin body. Let dry completely.
- Use a black marker to add eyes to the penguin and an orange marker to draw a beak and feet on the penguin.
- Cut a small piece of scrap fleece and tie it around the neck of the penguin using a slip knot. My fleece measured 7" x ¼". Trim the ends as desired once attached.
- Stand up your penguins and make a bunch of them so you have your own little penguin colony.
Remember to use doll pins if you want your penguins to stand on their own. Similar clothes pins have round bottoms and will not allow your penguin to stand on his own.
